Ourika tunnel: where does the Marrakech–Ouarzazate project stand?

It has been talked about for years: a tunnel through the High Atlas to reach Ouarzazate from Marrakech much faster. Where does the project stand at the end of 2026, and what can you do in the meantime?

Updated on 7 November 2026.

The project in brief

  • A tunnel of about 10 km, running through the Ourika valley.
  • The Ourika route was preferred to the Tichka pass after the preliminary studies.
  • Announced time saving: around 80 minutes for light vehicles, according to the 2022 study.
  • Estimated cost of 10 to 12 billion dirhams, based on statements by the Minister of Equipment reported in the press in 2026.

Where does it stand?

According to the press, Equipment and Water Minister Nizar Baraka confirmed in 2026 that the project is still at the study stage, with technical and geological difficulties. No clear timeline for construction has been announced, and he suggested the next steps could fall to the next government.

In short: don't count on the tunnel for your upcoming trips.

Meanwhile: the Tichka road

To reach Ouarzazate today, you take the N9 over the Tizi n'Tichka pass.

  • Duration: allow about 4 to 4.5 hours without stops.
  • Scenery: one of the most beautiful roads in Morocco, with bends, Berber villages and views of the High Atlas.
  • Ideal stop: the ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou, on the way (see our 2-day Marrakech – Ouarzazate road trip).

Winter tips

  • The pass is above 2,000 m: in winter, fog, snow or ice are possible. Check the weather and road conditions before you set off.
  • Leave early in the morning to avoid driving in the mountains at night.
  • Fill up before leaving Marrakech.
  • Take the bends slowly and keep your distance, especially behind lorries.
