Marrakech to Essaouira by car: route, stops and what to do

A white town with blue shutters, ramparts facing the ocean, a lively fishing port and a relaxed vibe: Essaouira is the favourite getaway for travellers staying in Marrakech. And by car, it's easy and enjoyable.

The route

  • Distance: about 190 km
  • Drive: about 2 h 30 to 3 h

The road is in good condition and crosses plains then hills covered in argan trees. Fill up before leaving and respect the limits: speed checks are frequent.

Stops on the way

  • Argan oil cooperatives: often run by women, they show how the oil is made and sell local products.
  • Goats in the trees: a surprising sight you can sometimes see by the roadside.
  • A coffee break in a small village to stretch your legs.

What to do in Essaouira

  • Wander the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site: quiet alleys, art galleries, thuya wood craftsmen.
  • Walk the ramparts (the Skala) at sunset.
  • Visit the fishing port and its blue boats, then try grilled fish right next to it.
  • Enjoy the long beach: walks, camel rides, or surfing and kitesurfing thanks to the wind.

Where to park

The medina is pedestrian. Park in a guarded car park near the ramparts or the port, then continue on foot. Keep a few dirhams for the attendant.

One day or two?

  • Day trip: possible, but leave early.
  • One night there: ideal to enjoy the sunset and a quiet evening.
