Oukaïmeden: skiing and hiking near Marrakech by car

Did you know you can ski less than two hours from Marrakech? Oukaïmeden, in the High Atlas, is a perfect getaway for a change of air, in winter and in summer.

Oukaïmeden at a glance

  • Distance: about 75 km from Marrakech, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road via the Ourika valley.
  • Altitude: the resort sits above 2,500 m, often described as one of the highest in Africa.
  • Perfect for: a full day from Marrakech.

In winter: skiing

When snow conditions allow, often from January to March, the resort offers skiing and snow activities. Snow is never guaranteed: check before you set off. Equipment can usually be rented on site.

The rest of the year: hiking and nature

Outside the snow season, the area is a starting point for hikes in the High Atlas, with high-mountain scenery and prehistoric rock carvings to discover. The air is cool, even in summer.

Tips for the drive

  • The road is full of bends and can be affected by fog or ice in winter: check the weather and road conditions before leaving.
  • Drive slowly and keep your distance.
  • Fill up before leaving Marrakech.
  • Pack warm clothes, sunglasses and suitable shoes.
  • Start early to enjoy the day and avoid driving back in the dark in the mountains.

Combine it with other stops

On the way you will pass through the Ourika valley: a good chance to add a lunch break by the river.
