5 road trips to take by car from Marrakech

With a rental car, Marrakech becomes the starting point for wonderful getaways. Here are 5 trip ideas, from half a day to several days, that you can enjoy at your own pace.

1. The Ourika Valley

• Distance: about 65 km to Setti Fatma
• Drive: about 1 h 30

The easiest getaway from Marrakech. The road follows the river past Berber villages, gardens and small riverside restaurants. At Setti Fatma, a hike leads to the waterfalls. Set off early at weekends: the valley is very popular with Moroccan families.

2. The Agafay desert

• Distance: about 40 km
• Drive: under an hour

No sand dunes like the Sahara, but a spectacular stone desert with views of the Atlas. People come for the sunset, a camel ride or dinner in a camp. The last few kilometres may be on a track: an SUV such as the Dacia Duster is comfortable.

3. Essaouira and the Atlantic coast

• Distance: about 190 km
• Drive: about 2 h 30 to 3 h

The blue-and-white town, its fishing port, ramparts and windy beach. On the way you will see argan trees (sometimes with goats perched in them!) and argan oil cooperatives. Ideal for 1 or 2 days.

4. Imlil and the High Atlas

• Distance: about 65 km
• Drive: about 1 h 30

Imlil is the starting point for hikes to Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. Even without the climb, the valley offers lovely walks. On the way, stop at the dam and the village of Asni.

5. Ouarzazate via the Tizi n'Tichka pass

• Distance: about 200 km
• Drive: about 4 h

One of Morocco's most beautiful roads, crossing the Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (over 2,200 m). Don't miss the ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Allow at least 2 days to enjoy it without rushing.
