Speed cameras, police and road checkpoints in Morocco: what to know

Many travellers hesitate to rent a car in Morocco because they worry about police checkpoints or speed cameras. Good news: with a few simple rules, everything goes smoothly. Here's what to know before hitting the road.

Police checkpoints: normal and frequent

At the entrance and exit of towns you'll often pass a police or gendarmerie checkpoint (STOP sign, cones, uniformed officers). This is completely normal in Morocco.

  • Slow down and come to a full stop at the STOP sign, even if the officer doesn't seem to look at you.
  • Most of the time, you'll simply be waved through.
  • If you're stopped: stay polite and calm, say hello ("Bonjour" or "Salam") and show the documents requested.
  • Checks are more frequent in summer and at weekends.

Documents to keep in the car

  • Your original driving licence. Photocopies and phone photos are not accepted.
  • Your passport.
  • The rental agreement and vehicle papers: we leave them in the glovebox.

A European or UK licence is fine for a tourist stay. If your licence isn't in Latin characters, bring an international driving permit.

Speed limits

Where Limit
In towns 40 or 60 km/h depending on signs
National roads 100 km/h
Motorways 120 km/h

Limits can drop suddenly when entering villages: watch the signs.

Speed cameras

  • Fixed cameras are installed on motorways and at town entrances and exits.
  • Mobile radar checks (often an officer by the roadside) are common on national roads.
  • The Waze app reports many checks and cameras in real time.

Fines: how does it work?

  • The most common offences: speeding, no seatbelt, phone in hand, not stopping at a STOP sign, crossing a solid line.
  • Fines range from a few hundred to over 1,000 dirhams depending on the offence.
  • Fines are often paid on the spot. Always ask for an official numbered receipt and never hand over cash without one.
  • Keep the receipt or take a photo of it.

Rules you must follow

  • Seatbelts are mandatory in the front and the back.
  • No phone in hand: hands-free kits are allowed.
  • Alcohol: tolerance is close to zero. If you drink, don't drive.
  • Children: use a suitable seat. We provide baby seats and boosters on request.
  • At roundabouts, be careful: priority habits vary, always slow down.
