Marrakech in winter: what to do and why rent a car?

In winter, days are mild and often sunny, ideal for sightseeing. Evenings and nights are cool, even cold, especially in the desert and the mountains. Pack warm clothes for the evening.

What to do in Marrakech in winter

• Stroll through the medina and souks without the summer heat.
• Enjoy Jemaa el-Fna square at sunset, with a mint tea on a terrace.
• Visit the gardens: Majorelle, Menara, Agdal.
• Warm up in a hammam after a day of sightseeing.

• See snow in the Atlas: the Oukaïmeden resort, about 75 km away, is one of the highest in Africa. When there's enough snow, you can go sledging or even skiing.
• Imlil and the Ourika Valley: superb landscapes with white peaks in the background.
• The Agafay desert: sunset and dinner in a camp (bring a warm jacket).
• Essaouira: the ocean and a calmer town, about 2 h 30 away.

Winter driving tips

• Check the weather before heading into the mountains: snow can close some roads, such as the Tizi n'Tichka pass.
• Leave early and get back before dark, which falls earlier in winter.
• An SUV such as the Dacia Duster or the Hyundai Tucson is more comfortable in the mountains.
• Keep a blanket and water in the car for long drives.
