Fuel in Morocco: petrol stations, petrol or diesel, practical tips

Filling up in Morocco is easy once you know a few local habits. Here is what to know before you hit the road.

Petrol stations

There are plenty of stations in towns and on the main roads, with big names such as Afriquia, TotalEnergies or Shell. In most cases an attendant fills the tank for you: just say the fuel and the amount, or "full".

Petrol or diesel: don't mix them up

Putting in the wrong fuel can damage the engine and spoil your trip. Before leaving:

  • check the label inside the fuel flap;
  • ask the agent when you collect the car;
  • remember the words: petrol is "sans plomb", and diesel is also called "gasoil" or "diesel".

How to pay

Cards are accepted at many stations in the big cities, but always keep some cash, especially away from the main roads. A small tip for the attendant (a few dirhams) is appreciated. Prices are shown at the pump and can change.

Before the Atlas or the desert

On some mountain roads, or towards Merzouga and Agafay, stations are fewer and sometimes far apart. Our simple rule:

  • fill up before leaving town;
  • never drop below a quarter of a tank;
  • top up at every major stop.

When you return the car

Return the car with the same fuel level as at the start and keep the last receipt: it is the easiest way to avoid any doubt.
