Travelling in Morocco during Ramadan: driving, sightseeing, planning

Travelling during Ramadan is a great way to see Morocco differently. The rhythm changes, but with a little planning everything goes very smoothly.

When is Ramadan?

The dates follow the lunar calendar and move about ten days earlier each year. In 2027 it is expected to start around early February, depending on the moon sighting. Check the exact date before you book.

A different daily rhythm

  • Days are calmer: many people get up later and some shops open later.
  • Some restaurants close during the day, but many places popular with tourists stay open. Ask ahead.
  • Life picks up after sunset: markets, squares and cafés come alive late into the night.

Driving during Ramadan

  • Avoid driving in the hour before the fast is broken (at sunset): the roads are busy and everyone is rushing home.
  • After the meal, cities are lively in the evening: allow extra time to park.
  • Start day trips early: the roads are quieter in the morning.
  • Fill up before long drives, especially towards the Atlas or the desert.

Good manners

  • Avoid eating, drinking or smoking openly in the street during the day.
  • Dress respectfully, especially in traditional neighbourhoods.
  • A simple "Ramadan Mubarak" is always welcome.

Why rent a car during Ramadan?

You manage your own schedule: early-morning excursions, back at the hotel before the rush, an evening in town without relying on timetables. Choose your car: free delivery to the airport, hotel or riad.
